job detailsOur client is a federal government agency who are focused the protection and care of the local Great Barrier Reef, managing activities, implementing plans and policies to ensure directly manage activities that take place in the marine park, implementing plans and policies for the heritage area.
The Scientific Writer will work within the small team to assist in producing high-quality scientific articles regarding the history, progress and outcomes of the Crown-of-thorns Starfish (COTS) Control Program. This position plays an important role in communicating the management insights obtained since the inception of the Control Program in 2012 to Reef managers and stakeholders including Traditional Owners, tourism operators, scientific researchers and the broader community.
This position is responsible for analysing and synthesising complex ecological data; developing impactful figures and diagrams and producing high-quality grey and white literature publications.
Duties
- Assist and lead in the analysis, interpretation and visualisation of COTS Control Program data and assist with the writing/editing of scientific manuscripts for publication.
- Provide support for the Reef Interventions section, including but not limited to:
- Developing high quality conceptual diagrams explaining the history and progress of the COTS control program; the strategic management of COTS populations and the ecological understanding of COTS dynamics in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
- Updating key management documents, including the COTS Strategic Management Framework.
Skills & Experience:
- PhD level qualification in marine ecology or related discipline.
- Strong publication record in marine ecology or related discipline.
- Experienced in complex (temporal and spatial) ecological analyses using R or similar.
- Have research or operational experience in the Crown-of-thorns Starfish (COTS) Control Program (desired)
- Experienced in ecological analyses (spatial and times series data)
- Proficient in Adobe Illustrator and collaborative manuscript preparation
It is expected that the successful candidate will possess strong oral/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. They will display initiative, attention to detail, and have the ability to work autonomously and unsupervised whilst contributing to the wider team's objectives.
