There is an immediate need for a Principal Design Engineer in the Eight Mile Plains office on an initial 4 month contract. Opportunity will be available to apply for the position internally or have the contract extended, as our client is building their team.
The responsibility of the Principal Design Engineer is to work with the Engineering Delivery Team providing engineering support and maintenance guidance for the wider business $1.5 billion asset and infrastructure base. You will develop and contribute to the planning, review and development of recommendations for the future strategic direction and optimisation of company assets and infrastructure. You will provide strategic engineering oversight on behalf of the Assets and Infrastructure Services Team with the long term aim to optimise and improve the built environment and infrastructure, improving patient care and experience. The role includes strategic long-term planning for the company as a healthcare provider and portfolio manager, examining opportunities for continuous improvement and efficiencies of practice while contributing to the delivery of complex clinical environments incorporating state of the art healthcare technology in new and live facilities. This position is responsible for engineering advice on all aspects of development and construction relating to the wider business and all facilities, including but not limited to;
- Refurbishment of existing clinical space, new build development, major infrastructure upgrades, disaster management and resilience and redundancy planning. Guidance and governance will be provided to internal and external design and executive teams, ensuring an evidence-based approach to all decisions.
- In addition to assisting with delivery of construction projects the position will coordinate with the site based maintenance teams advising on engineering aspects of the day to day running of the health facilities and advising on items such as resilience, replacement and renewal strategy, monitoring and control as well as quality assurance and reporting.
- The position supports the Engineering Delivery Team, developing and maintaining strong relationships with relevant key stakeholders, including local communities, and service delivery partners within the public and private sectors, management and staff representatives.
The successful candidate will:
- Demonstrate their ability in technical and engineering delivery for the evaluation, design and management of facility infrastructure and clinical infrastructure in a multidisciplinary environment to guide and influence stakeholders in the evaluation of current and future asset performance, meeting service delivery targets and strategic goals.
- Demonstrate experience in senior roles, delivering multidisciplinary projects through design and construction phases in a busy operational health facility (or similar), with a sound understanding and application of Australian Standards and other infrastructure requirements pertaining to healthcare facilities.
- Exhibit highly developed communication, interpersonal, consultation, partnership and negotiation skills to create a strong client focus, influence the decisions, action or perceptions of stakeholders and achieve outcomes and maintain effective relationships with senior and multi-disciplinary staff at the organisational, state and national levels.
- Promote and implement continuous development and innovation to ensure improvement and a strong understanding of quality systems, standards and procedures, whilst proactively identifying, accepting and managing risk associated with improvements and leading the improvement by example.
- Drive and motivate facility teams to continuously track, monitor and develop their own performance, promoting a learning and knowledge-sharing environment.
- Build networks with groups internally and externally to maintain contemporary knowledge, and an up-to-date understanding of management and organisational strategies for the service.
Duties and responsibilities: .
- Participate and provide expertise to the requirements of engineering evaluation, design and management of facility infrastructure and clinical infrastructure in a multidisciplinary environment to guide and influence stakeholders in the evaluation of current and future asset performance in meeting service delivery targets and strategic goals.
- Translate clinical service standards to define a level of asset performance that is appropriate and expected to be achieved, enabling assets to meet acceptable levels of efficiency and effectiveness.
- Work proactively with senior responsible officers, Managers and Executives to establish and maintain asset management governance processes. This includes but not limited to:
- Manage the asset criticality assessment to determine suitability of current controls and treatments.
- Manage condition assessment process and identify areas for enhanced controls or renewal.
- Manage asset risks with a view to reducing the current risks by implementing additional treatments.
- Ensure compliance with the performance based requirements of Queensland Capital Infrastructure Requirements, Australian Health Facility Guidelines, the Building Code of Australia, Workplace Health and Safety Act and other relevant Australian Standards.
- Undertake asset life cycle modelling, including costings, risk tolerance, investment prioritisation, business cases and project scope.
- Ensure product quality through periodical controls and evaluations.
- Optimise work methodology in tools, process and training.
- Manage budget activities related to nominated projects.
- Assist in the development and maintain business systems and procedures to ensure effective and efficient processes are in place to manage the maintenance of the infrastructure and asset base for the wider business.
- Assist in the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives for Assets and Infrastructure Services.
- Develop in conjunction with the Director Asset Management, appropriate quality programs with key performance indicators monitoring outcomes with regular review and actions in place to address issues.
- Plan, implement and monitor risk management protocols throughout the wider business as they apply to asset and infrastructure performance and maintenance.
- Assist with the establishment and performance of a continuous improvement process.
- Assist in the development of strategic and annual maintenance plans.
- Ensure that hospital facilities maintenance programs meet legislated requirements.
- Develop effective relationships with peers and external professional associations across industry, including representation of the business on relevant and significant committees, to maintain and improve knowledge of emergent trends, developments and legislation and assess impacts for company assets and infrastructure.
- Provide ethical decision making in the achievement of organisational goals.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure/stressful conditions and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
- Act in accordance and ensure compliance with workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination requirements.
- Ensure patients and other staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.

Requirements of this role include:
- Minimum 3 years experience in a similar Principal Design Engineering role.
- Demonstrated experience in managing development within a large infrastructure and asset base.
- Proven financial and procurement experience.
- Demonstrated experience in infrastructure development, maintenance and management in the healthcare sector.
- Demonstrated experience in large scale healthcare developments in both live and new environments.
It is expected that the successful candidate will possess strong oral/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. They will display initiative, attention to detail, and have the ability to work autonomously and unsupervised whilst contributing to the wider team's objectives of ensuring service delivery exceeds expectations.
