Job summary

Our Client, a busy and growing garden centre in Hervey Bay requires the services of an experienced horticulturalist.

This position will suit someone who has undertaken a similar position before and wants to be part of a growing team.

The remuneration for position will be negotiated with the individual based on their individual experience and skills .

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The primary role of a horticulturist is to care, maintain, and cultivate plant propagation ready for sale by the Garden Centre along with maintaining adequate stock levels to meet sales demands.

REPORT TO

The Garden Centre Manager.

RESPONSIBLE & ACCOUNTABLE FORMaintain inventory plant stock levels to sustain the business.Create purchase orders and have the Garden Centre Manager approve the orders prior to ordering with the supplier.Maintain proper records for purchases.Source new suppliers as needed.Propagate plants from seed and clone.Maintain a good pest management system for all plant stock.Perform regular soil tests for pH and EC (electrical conductivity).Implement an IPM program [Integrated pest management (IPM) combines the use of biological, cultural and chemical practices to control insect pests in agricultural production], hold over tender plants throughout the winter, and start new plants in the spring. Merchandise the sales area and run the retail office while other staff are on lunch or doing other works.Water, transplant, stake, clone, clean pots, equipment, facility, trim, process and package plants.Design, install and maintain raised vegetable and ornamental gardens.Undertake planting and transplanting seeds, bulbs, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns.Clean gardens and remove rubbish. Maintain plants and gardens by watering, weeding, fertilising, and mowing lawns. Adjust mist irrigation systems, shade and ventilation in a nursery, garden or greenhouse.Keep all work areas tidy and remove rubbish.Loading, unloading and moving nursery supplies and equipment.Manage crop scheduling for timing of appropriate planting and harvesting.Attend and actively participate in all formal and informal in-house training sessions as required. Attend and actively participate in meetings as required.Keep up-to-date with industry changes, techniques and information.Follow all lawful instructions given by the Garden Centre Manager.Communicate any issues that impede your performance to the Garden Centre Manager as soon as they become known.Undertake all actions under the Work Health Safety & Environmental Acts to ensure the safety of all workers and customers.Assist spot Quality Control issues in the garden centre and report to the Garden Centre Manager.Understand and follow all business policy, procedures and processes.Contribute to the ongoing improvement to the business and its policy, procedures and processes and follow the existing policy and procedures.Assist market the business by asking for referrals for new business and by upselling other products and services to existing customers.Assist the business to comply with all Federal, State and Local government legal or compliance issues.Maintain a professional approach to all customers and staff dealings.Maintain a confidential and professional work environment.Do not undertake any activities that would bring the business into disrepute.The use of drugs, smoking and alcohol is expressly forbidden in the workplace. Prescription drugs will be treated on a merit by merit basis and approval is required from the Garden Centre Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCEA Horticulture Degree. 3 years experience as a Horticulturist in a nursery.Physically fit and be able to undertake the functions of the position which requires regular physical activity.Observant and methodical in the way you approach your work.Good written and verbal communication skills.Good Microsoft office skills with word, excel & outlook.Enjoy working in an outdoor work environment.Enjoy working in teams.Able to meet KPIs set by the business.
