Randstad is proud to partner with the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) to recruit an enthusiastic and energetic Senior Chemist to join their drug testing laboratory that analyses samples collected from racing animals in Queensland. The position will be engaged as a 12 month fixed term engagement.

Reporting to the General Manager - Analytical Services, the Senior Chemist provides advanced analytical support to the RSCs laboratory staff to ensure that the delivery of high-quality analytical data is completed within appropriate timeframes and complies with the Queensland Racing Integrity Act 2016 and/or the Rules of Racing.

The job would be ideal for a freshly graduated M.SC or Ph.D who is looking to utilise their scientific knowledge to improve the testing undertaken by the RSC and gain experience working in an operational laboratory.

Duties include:

- Utilising the scientific knowledge gained during undergraduate study to successfully complete projects that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the complex analytical activities the Racing Science Centre undertakes.
- Undertaking analytical activities using advanced techniques such as gas and liquid chromatography hyphenated to mass spectrometry to confirm the presence of substances that are prohibited under the Rules of Racing. Sample matrices include blood, urine, and hair.
- Collating data from projects to provide a comprehensive summary of the outcomes. This includes writing scientific papers for submission to journals.
- Complying with NATA ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements, including adhering to approved quality control procedures, assisting with the preparation of operating procedures and other work instructions, and ensuring that all work activities meet the RSCs requirements.
- Actively participating in a team environment and contributing to a positive culture, where team members enjoy coming to work, and understand the contributions their role plays in the success of business outcomes.
- Modelling the safety culture of QRIC by reporting all incidents and hazards and ensuring work is undertaken in the safest way possible, following all WHS legislation, policies/procedures, and guidelines relevant to the job.
- Ensuring all non-compliance issues are reported promptly in accordance with QRIC requirements demonstrating ethical behaviour and integrity as required by the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994.

The successful candidate will:

- A minimum of a Masters Degree in science from a recognised tertiary institution, with a major in chemistry, and be eligible for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Incorporated (RACI) as a chartered chemist. A Masters degree or equivalent research experience in a relevant field is also preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and utilising technology, techniques, systems, and practices consistent with accepted laboratory standards.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with knowledge and ability to research and document scientific outputs.
