Job Description
The purpose of this role is to assist the Senior Manager and the Business Group to build strong Biosecurity business cases nationally and regionally that create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers. Ensure effective, efficient and compliant contract management that aligns with GRDC's vision, values and strategic goals by effectively managing, people, budget, and technological resources.
- Supporting the Senior Managers, GRDC Executive and the National Panel, to identify national strategic R&D requirements in Biosecurity including but not limited to; reducing the adverse impacts and threats of plant and animal, pests and diseases of national priority for the Australian grain industry.
- Develop business cases that address gaps in the RD&E of national and regional biosecurity hazards that pose a serious risk and adverse impact to grain growers.
- Responsible to ensure IP registers are established, required sub-contractor arrangements finalised and potential alterations or special conditions to the Agreement are developed to deliver project outcomes and outputs and with the approval of the GRDC legal group.
- Responsible for identifying communication opportunities for agreed audiences as they arise and the timing for delivery of projects, biosecurity updates, products and services in collaboration with Grower Communications and Extension business unit.
- Management ofBiosecurity investments such as, but not limited to; -
- GRDC investment plan aligned with the Commonwealth Biosecurity surveillance needs including, improving methodology to satisfy area freedom from pests.
- Leverage off commercial data and contribute to the National Biosecurity Innovation Program.
- Understanding and awareness of technology enhanced surveillance - species identification, predicted and unpredicted biological instances.
- Support the Senior Manager to partner with government bodies and industry/community to adopt a systematic approach to determining and planning for national priority weed, animal, plant and environmental pests and diseases.
- Identification of and propose targeted surveillance on high-risk pathways both into and within Australia
- Understand and awareness of international movement of biosecurity threats, liaise and coordination of surveillance with PHA led State based biosecurity activities and Grain Biosecurity Officers .
- Provide insight to the Senior Manager on biosecurity matters including market access issues related to biotic material / threats (e.g., weed seeds, snails, blackleg spores).
- Support the Senior Manager with key stakeholders and contribute to the development of a standardised National biosecurity system i.e., pre-border activity, surveillance, risk assessments, emergency response action plans, and research and development.
- Develop strong relationships across the Biosecurity industry and leverage off networks of key technical specialists, to share data, develop intelligence and improve capability against biosecurity threats to Australia.

GRDC are seeking a career driven individual who is eager to commence their next career chapter with leaps and bounds, by means of utilising their combined biosecurity, R&D and Agri-Science experience to provide material impact to the wider Australian Grain and Agriculture communities.
- Proven awareness of international and domestic trade frameworks, strategy, and policies in the Australian agricultural sector.
- Demonstrated experience in project negotiation, facilitation, and management
- Understanding of commercial principles including finance, brand management, IP management, licensing and deal development
- Strong analytical skills and the capacity to leverage off external expertise and think strategically, including the ability to provide sound project and issue advice
- Ability to synthesise information and provide a summary and recommended options.
Mandatory Requirements:
- A degree in Biological Science, Agricultural Science, or a demonstrated minimum 5 years sound knowledge of related industry experience in a Biosecurity R&D field.
- Must be prepared to travel as and when required
- Must be willing to undergo all Pre-employment Medical and Police checks
- Must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
