NSW Primary Industries (NSW DPI) within NSW Department of Industry supports the development of profitable primary industries that create a more prosperous NSW and contributes to a better environment through the sustainable use of natural resources.
DPI Fisheries, a Branch of NSW DPI, is responsible for administration of the Fisheries Management Act 1994 and the Marine Estate Management Act 2014. The primary objective of the Fisheries branch is to deliver on expectations relating to both economic growth and careful stewardship of our aquatic resources. The Branch leads NSW fisheries and aquaculture industry management, development and conservation through research, policy and regulatory compliance to foster sustainable and economically viable commercial, recreational and aboriginal fishing and aquaculture sectors. The Branch manages the protection of key fish habitats and marine biodiversity, threatened species, oversees fish stock conservation.
About the Role
The Program Leader Freshwater Environment will lead a team to manage and restore aquatic habitats and fishery resources within the freshwater environments of NSW. This includes providing high level specialist advice on aquatic habitat and fish conservation issues, policies, and operational matters; negotiating and facilitating stakeholder interaction for program and policy development, and; delivering project outcomes and strategic initiatives to meet legislative responsibilities relating to aquatic habitat management in NSW.
These will contribute towards the achievement of positive outcomes for aquatic biodiversity and key fish habitats consistent with the objectives and the statutory requirements of the Fisheries Management Act 1994 and contractual obligations as required.
Key responsibilities for the Program Leader Freshwater Environment role include, but not limited to: Provide high level strategic advice on legislative and policy development to promote improved management of fisheries conservation and aquatic environmental Provide high level leadership and support through analysis, strategic planning, project management, and internal and external stakeholder liaison Build and maintain strategic and effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and lead the delivery of projects and/or reforms in natural resource management and aquatic rehabilitation Access resources for project delivery in an environment of changing constraints on financial and human resources Providing high quality, pragmatic, and balanced policy advice on issues such as fisheries conservation, aquatic habitat management and water reform activities
This role will conduct strategic negotiations and resolve conflicts with key stakeholders involved in the sustainable management of fisheries and water resource sharing, and advocate for the conservation of aquatic resources and threatened species at a State and Commonwealth level.
This role reports to the Director Freshwater Environment.
About You
You will be a highly motivated professional with proven project and people management experience. You will have the ability to manage senior stakeholder and client relationships. You will be a strong and confident communicator who can manage competing priorities and interests while maintaining a professional demeanour and can do attitude.
Key knowledge and experience Project management skills and experience in natural resource management and rehabilitation. Extensive experience in policy development and implementation and working across partner agencies to establish productive relationships. Thorough knowledge of natural systems and related management priorities to enhance their long-term resilience. Thorough understanding of the development and implementation of planning and regulatory frameworks for natural resource management
Essential requirements Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in natural resource management, environmental science or public policy Current NSW Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel
