Your new role
The Environmental Health Officer is responsible for delivering environmental health service provisions aimed at protecting, promoting and enhancing the health and well being of the community and environment. Position objectives will be achieved through knowledge and experience in the application of legislation and regulatory tools, undertaking field assessments, investigating complaints, assessing applications, and providing professional advice.
- Administer delegated responsibilities under the Local Government Act 1989, Public Health and Well being Act 2008, Food Act 1984, Environment Protection Act 2017, Tobacco Act 1987, Residential Tenancies Act 1997 and other relevant Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice, Standards, Local Laws and other statutory requirements delegated by department.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Domestic Waste water Management Plan in accordance with State Government and local government policy.
- Assess applications for permits to install/alter on-site waste water management systems, carry out necessary inspections and issue permits and certificates.
- Actively participate in the development and implementation of the Municipal Emergency Management Plan.
- Assist with the review and implementation of Environmental Health policies and plans.
- Investigate, mediate and resolve complaints and nuisances within the meaning of the Public Health and
Well being Act 2008.
- Prepare evidence, initiate enforcement action and represent the department in legal proceedings for infringements against the relevant Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Local Laws.
- Investigate outbreaks of infectious disease in accordance with Department of Health protocols.
- Maintain records necessary for the administration of the position.
- Carry out all necessary investigations and prepare reports as requested or directed by the Coordinator Environmental Health.
- Assist in monitoring activities of other agencies and internal departments whose work has an impact on public health. Encouraging liaison where appropriate.
- Undertake special projects and activities related to Environmental Health.
- Provide support to other staff as required.
- Other duties within the scope of the employees skills, competence and training as directed.
**Please note, to be considered for this role, you MUST:
- Tertiary qualification i.e. in Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public and Environmental Health), or equivalent qualifications acceptable for membership with Environmental Health Professionals Australia together with relevant experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge, experience and administration of domestic waste water management legislative framework.
- Demonstrated knowledge, experience and administration of other relevant environmental health legislative framework such as food safety, public health and well being, tobacco control, infectious disease control and residential tenancy.
- An ability to work as part of a team as well as operate autonomously, with a high level of interpersonal, organisational and time management skills.
- Demonstrated experience identifying complex problems, developing solutions, ideas and opportunities for resolution.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of customers and service providers with discretion and sensitivity.
